A Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) deputy was injured and a suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Leland, North Carolina, on Monday, September 22, 2025. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is currently investigating the incident.

Details of the Shooting

According to reports, deputies responded to a loitering call at a gas station located at 1930 Mercantile Dr. around 5 a.m. Employees had requested the suspect, later identified as Brandon Wayne Taylor, 34, from Collinsville, Virginia, to leave the premises. Upon arrival, deputies attempted to speak with Taylor.

The SBI stated that during the interaction, Taylor allegedly drew a gun and began firing at the deputies. One deputy was struck twice, with one bullet hitting his ballistic vest, potentially saving his life. Deputies returned fire, resulting in Taylor's death at the scene.

Deputy's Condition and Investigation

The injured deputy was transported to a local hospital for treatment and has since been released. Brunswick County Sheriff Brian Chism acknowledged the dangers faced by law enforcement, stating, "This is truly an example of the potential dangers we face every day."

Taylor's body has been taken to the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. The SBI is leading the ongoing investigation into the shooting. No further information is being released at this time.

Following the incident, other law enforcement agencies expressed support for the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office. The Carolina Beach Police Department acknowledged the risks law enforcement officers face daily. The shooting serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers inherent in law enforcement duties.
