Over 90,000 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Vehicles Recalled Due to HVAC System Issues
More than 90,000 vehicles from Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru are being recalled due to potential issues with their heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The recall affects certain models from the 2023 to 2025 model years. The problem stems from a potential electrical compressor failure that could render the defroster or defogger inoperative, increasing the risk of a crash.
Which Models Are Affected?
According to a September 5 recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the following models are included in the recall:
- Toyota bZ4X (2023-2025)
- Lexus RZ (2023-2025)
- Subaru Solterra (2023-2025)
What is the Cause of the Recall?
The HVAC systems in the affected vehicles may experience an electrical compressor failure. This failure can prevent the defroster and defogger from working correctly, which can significantly reduce visibility in certain weather conditions and heighten the possibility of accidents. Toyota's parent company identified the issue.

Owners of the impacted vehicles will receive notification letters, which are expected to be mailed by October 20. In the meantime, you can take these actions:

- Check the NHTSA recall database or the USA TODAY car and motor vehicle recall database.

What Should You Do If Your Car Is Recalled?
If your vehicle is part of the recall, you should schedule an appointment with a Toyota, Lexus, or Subaru dealer as soon as possible. The dealer will update the HVAC control software free of charge. They will also inspect the electrical compressor and replace it if necessary. The repair is free of charge.
Remedy
The recall notice states the issue can be resolved by updating the cars' HVAC system software. Dealers will also inspect and replace the electrical compressor if deemed necessary.
