Man Arrested for Skipping Restaurant Bill on Florida Road, Forced to Wash Dishes
A man was arrested on Florida Road in Durban yesterday (Monday) after allegedly refusing to pay his R1500 restaurant bill. The restaurant management reportedly made him wash dishes before reporting the incident to the police. He was subsequently charged with bilking.
The Incident Unfolds
According to Kyle van Reenen, general manager of Ensure Security, they received an alert at approximately 18:00 regarding the incident at a popular restaurant. "It was reported that a male suspect had consumed over R1500 worth of food and then refused to pay, claiming he had no money," said Van Reenen.
Ensure Security's area vehicle was immediately dispatched to the scene. While waiting for law enforcement, the restaurant management took matters into their own hands. "In the interim, the restaurant’s management made the suspect wash dirty dishes in the kitchen as a consequence, while awaiting the arrival of law enforcement," Van Reenen explained.
Police Involvement and Charges
The SAPS (South African Police Service) were called to the restaurant and arrested the suspect. "The SAPS were called to the scene and, upon arrival, took the suspect into custody for further investigation and processing," Van Reenen added. A case of bilking was reportedly opened with SAPS.
Aftermath
The incident highlights the challenges faced by restaurants dealing with customers who attempt to avoid paying their bills. The unusual measure of forcing the suspect to wash dishes sparked debate, but ultimately the police were called to handle the situation. The investigation is ongoing.
