Moldova's Pro-EU Party Secures Clear Parliamentary Majority Amidst Russian Interference Claims
Moldova's pro-Western governing party, the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), achieved a decisive victory in the recent parliamentary election, defeating pro-Russian groups. The election was widely seen as a critical juncture for the nation, presenting a stark choice between aligning with the European Union or drifting back towards Moscow's influence.
Election Results and Analysis
With nearly all polling station reports tallied, the PAS secured 50.1% of the vote, according to electoral data. The pro-Russian Patriotic Electoral Bloc followed with 24.2%. Other parties entering parliament include the Russia-friendly Alternativa Bloc, the populist Our Party, and the right-wing Democracy at Home party. This outcome provides the PAS with a clear majority, estimated at around 55 of the 101 seats in the legislature, enabling them to govern without needing to form unstable coalitions.
Igor Grosu, leader of the PAS, described the election as a crucial battle against forces aiming to undermine Moldova. He stated that "The Russian Federation threw into battle everything it had that was most vile — mountains of money, mountains of lies, mountains of illegalities," alleging significant interference in the electoral process.
Implications for Moldova's Future
The victory is seen as a reaffirmation of Moldova's commitment to a westward path and future EU membership. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the results, stating, “You made your choice clear: Europe. Democracy. Freedom. No attempt to sow fear or division could break your resolve.” Moldova applied to join the EU in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and was granted candidate status that same year.
"A PAS majority saves the party from having to form a coalition that would have most likely been unstable and would have slowed down the pace of reforms to join the EU," - Cristian Cantir, Moldovan associate professor of international relations at Oakland University.
Challenges and Allegations of Russian Interference
The election took place against a backdrop of accusations regarding Russia's attempts to influence the outcome. Moldovan authorities have repeatedly alleged a vast “hybrid war” waged by Russia, including orchestrating a vote-buying scheme, conducting cyberattacks, inciting riots, and spreading disinformation. Dorin Recean, the likely nominee for Prime Minister, emphasized the need to unite society in the face of these divisions caused by Russia.
Election day itself was marred by incidents such as bomb threats and cyberattacks. Despite these challenges, voter turnout was significant, with approximately 1.6 million people casting ballots.
