Dodgers' October Pitching Plans: The Role of Shohei Ohtani
The Los Angeles Dodgers are gearing up for the postseason, and a key question revolves around their pitching strategy, particularly the role of Shohei Ohtani. Despite limited innings this season due to elbow surgery recovery, Ohtani is considered a valuable asset.
Andrew Friedman's Perspective on Ohtani
Andrew Friedman, the president of baseball operations, emphasized Ohtani's potential impact. He described Ohtani as "one of the best starters in the National League," highlighting the unique situation of having a player contribute both as a pitcher and a hitter. Friedman stated, "Selfishly, personally, it’s going to be really fun to watch.”
Ohtani's Role as a Starter and the Ohtani Rule
The Dodgers plan to utilize Ohtani as a starter in October, confirming earlier speculation. This decision is also influenced by the Shohei Ohtani rule, which allows him to remain as the designated hitter after being removed as a pitcher, but only if he starts the game on the mound. Friedman expressed his opinion about the rule, saying, "I think they missed the mark with it. I think the whole idea behind it is to celebrate people who can actually do this, which right now he’s really one of one that is talented enough to do this."
Limitations and Game Strategy
Even when pitching, Ohtani's outings will likely be limited to around five innings. Friedman acknowledged the unique demands on Ohtani, saying, "No one is taking on more than pitching, and also hitting and running the bases. So just trying to be cognizant of that." The team will also carefully consider rest days, as Friedman said they won't use him on "regular" rest after a start.
Other Pitching Options and Bullpen Considerations
Beyond Ohtani, the Dodgers are evaluating other pitching options. The team's healthy starting pitchers and struggling bullpen may lead to some starters shifting into bullpen roles. Emmet Sheehan is a potential candidate for a hybrid role. Manager Dave Roberts mentioned the importance of having multiple lefties in the bullpen.
The Fluidity of the Pitching Staff
Friedman emphasized the fluid nature of the pitching staff decisions. Factors such as opponents, game situations, and player performance will influence the final choices. "I think who we play, when we play, will obviously be factors. And so will performance. And we’ve got a lot of guys that have recently come back," said Friedman.
Roki Sasaki's Potential Contribution
Another potential option is Roki Sasaki, who has regained his velocity during his rehab assignment. Rob Hill, the organization’s director of pitching, worked with Sasaki to refine his mechanics. Both Friedman and Roberts left open the possibility of Sasaki pitching in the big leagues this season.
Ohtani's Overall Impact
Ultimately, Ohtani's presence is expected to be significant. Friedman stated, "Watching him experience his first experience with October (last year), (we were) talking about just how incredible it’ll be and how electric it’ll be when you layer on the other side as well. So obviously the impact he will make will be significant on both sides of the ball."
