German Foreign Minister Urges Immediate Start to Two-State Solution Process, Criticizes Israeli Offensive in Gaza

Germany Urges Immediate Start to Two-State Solution Process in Middle East

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called for the immediate initiation of efforts towards a two-state solution in the Middle East. This comes amid criticism of the ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza City, which Wadephul deemed misguided. He emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution that allows both Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security.

Wadephul's Stance on Palestinian State Recognition

According to Wadephul, while Germany believes that the recognition of a Palestinian state is more likely to occur later in the process, the process itself must begin without delay. He voiced support for the two-state solution, stating that it's the most viable path forward. "For Germany, recognition of a Palestinian state comes more at the end of the process, but this process must begin now," said the minister.

International Conference and Calls for Ceasefire

Wadephul is scheduled to attend a conference organized by France and Saudi Arabia on the eve of the UN General Assembly. The conference's objective is to garner greater support for a two-state solution, which envisions Israel and an independent, democratic Palestinian state coexisting peacefully. In addition to advocating for this solution, Wadephul called for "an immediate ceasefire, significantly more humanitarian aid for the people in Gaza and the immediate, unconditional release of the hostages."

Criticism of Israeli Actions and Annexation Warnings

The German Foreign Minister strongly criticized the Israeli offensive on Gaza City. He further warned against any actions that would lead to the annexation of occupied territories, asserting that such steps would "undermine the chance of a lasting solution to the conflict." He reiterated that a "negotiated two-state solution is the way to enable Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace, security and dignity."

Growing International Support for Palestinian Statehood

Ahead of the UN General Debate, several countries are reportedly planning to formally recognize a Palestinian state. Besides France, Belgium and New Zealand have either announced or hinted at their intention to grant recognition, despite opposition from Israel. Britain, Canada, and Australia have already taken this step, becoming the first major Western economies to do so.
