SADAG Launches Free Online Support Group for South African Teachers Battling Stress and Burnout

SADAG Launches Free Online Support Group for South African Educators

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) has launched a new, free online support group to address rising stress and burnout among South African teachers. This initiative aims to provide a confidential space for educators, pupil support agents, and school staff to connect and receive emotional support as they navigate the increasing pressures of the education sector.

The Growing Need for Support

The education sector is facing a significant increase in the need for emotional and psychological support, with teachers often carrying heavy workloads and facing growing demands. SADAG's new support group aims to address the anxiety, burnout, and emotional stress experienced by those working in education across South Africa. This support group is essential for those in the education sector, who are on the frontline and often face immense pressure.

Expert Insights on Teacher Wellbeing

Nirvana, an experienced educator and support group leader, emphasizes the overwhelming pressures teachers face: "Educators are dealing with increased work stress, massive pressure, and unrealistic deadlines that leave them stressed, anxious, and burnt out – and so many are silently struggling. We're all dealing with trauma from experiences at work or life itself, and I think this is something we need to talk about and support each other in a space that feels safe." The Teacher Demographic Dividend Project at Stellenbosch University further highlights these challenges, revealing alarming trends in teacher wellbeing.

The Impact of Prioritizing Teacher Mental Health

Roshni Parbhoo-Seetha, Project Manager in Education at SADAG, highlights the broader impact of supporting teachers' mental health: "When we take care of our educators' mental health, we take care of the entire school community. Teachers who feel supported and valued are better able to inspire, guide, and uplift learners. Educators' well-being is not a luxury. It is essential to build stronger, healthier schools." This sentiment is echoed by Dr. Heleen Hofmeyr at RESEP, who notes that many teachers feel their wellbeing is not prioritized by the system.

Key Findings and Statistics

According to a study by the Teacher Demographic Dividend Project, roughly 50% of surveyed teachers indicated they are considering leaving the profession in the next decade due to emotional exhaustion, overwhelming administrative tasks, and a lack of support. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for interventions like SADAG's online support group, providing vital support in combating teacher burnout.

Details of the Support Group

The free online support group provides a safe and confidential space for teachers and educators to connect, share their experiences, and learn practical coping strategies. It aims to provide peer-led support and a sense of community. Nirvana emphasized, "It’s difficult to pour from an empty cup. I’d like for us to help each other deal with different experiences at work and also create a safe space to share what we are going through – so that we can feel a little less alone."

How to Join the Support Group

The free support group launches online on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 7:00 PM. Thereafter, the meetings will take place on the first Wednesday of every month. To join this support group, contact Nirvana on 081 591 0084 for details.
