Some chatbot users are actively reducing the friendly tone of their artificial intelligence agents as reports of AI-fueled delusions increase. Experts are now calling for government regulation to protect vulnerable users, a concern that the Canadian AI ministry is reportedly addressing.

Growing Concerns Over AI "Psychosis" and Sycophancy

Dave Pickell, a Vancouver musician, became concerned about his relationship with OpenAI's ChatGPT after reading about instances of "AI psychosis." He realized the chatbot's human-like tendencies might be "manipulative" and started using prompts to create emotional distance. This includes instructing the chatbot to avoid using "I" pronouns, flattering language, and answering questions with more questions.

"I recognized that I was responding to it like it was a person," said Pickell.

Reported cases of "AI psychosis" have involved individuals experiencing delusions from conversations with chatbots, sometimes leading to manic episodes, violence, or even suicide. A recent study indicated that large language models (LLMs) can encourage delusional thinking because of their tendency to flatter and agree with users.

Industry Awareness and User Strategies

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the issue of chatbot sycophancy, noting that while annoying for most users, it could encourage delusions in individuals with "fragile mental states." Reddit users are also sharing strategies for toning down the "flattery" and "fluff" in chatbot responses, including prompts like "Challenge my assumptions — don't just agree with me" and tweaking personalization settings to eliminate "empathy phrases."

Expert Advice and the Call for Regulation

Alona Fyshe, a Canada CIFAR AI chair at Amii, advises users to start each conversation from scratch and avoid sharing personal information with LLMs. This is not only to reduce emotional connection but also to protect personal data, as user chats can be used to train AI models. She emphasizes the importance of treating LLMs as public forums. Peter Lewis, Canada Research Chair in trustworthy artificial intelligence at Ontario Tech University, suggests assigning chatbots a "silly" persona but stresses that the responsibility for safety shouldn't fall solely on individual users.

"We cannot just tell ordinary people who are using these tools that they're doing it wrong," said Lewis.

Ebrahim Bagheri, a University of Toronto professor specializing in responsible AI development, is calling for safeguards to make it clear that chatbots are not real and for education on chatbots to be incorporated into school curricula. He and other experts suggest that governments regulate LLMs so they do not engage in human-like conversations. Former OpenAI safety researcher Steven Adler has also posted an analysis offering ways tech companies can reduce "chatbot psychosis," including better staffing support teams.

Government Response and International Considerations

A spokesperson for the AI Minister Evan Solomon stated that the ministry is examining chatbot safety issues. The federal government launched an AI Strategy Task Force alongside a 30-day public consultation on AI safety and literacy. However, with most major AI companies based in the U.S. and the Trump administration historically against AI regulation, Canada's efforts could face challenges. Chris Tenove of the University of British Columbia suggests that Canada may face a "U.S. backlash" if it moves forward with online harms regulation.
