Savannah Bananas Bring 'Banana Ball' Phenomenon to Yankee Stadium for Sold-Out New York Debut

Savannah Bananas Bring Their Unique Brand of Baseball to Yankee Stadium

The Savannah Bananas, known for their unconventional and entertaining style of baseball, made their Bronx debut at Yankee Stadium this weekend. Playing a pair of exhibition games to sold-out crowds, the team brought its brand of trick plays, dances, and family-friendly fun to New York.

A Different Kind of Baseball Experience

While the Yankees were away in Boston, nearly 100,000 fans filled Yankee Stadium for the Savannah Bananas. “It’s been one of the most in-demand tickets we’ve had,” said Tony Bruno, senior VP of Yankee Global Enterprises. “They bring a different flair to the game. It’s a phenomenon.” The team, comprised of mostly former college and minor league players with unique off-field skills, has been touring major league stadiums, gaining popularity nationwide.

What Makes the Savannah Bananas Unique?

The Savannah Bananas' games feature fast-paced action and rule changes, such as stepping out of the batter's box resulting in a strike, or a fan catching a foul ball resulting in an out. They also incorporate dances, antics, and scripted routines throughout the game. According to Jared Orton, the team’s president, the plays and results are not scripted. Players like Luke Weaver have compared them to the Harlem Globetrotters, noting the team's "unique skill sets, with trick plays" and that "it’s good for baseball, putting twists on the game."

National Acclaim and Future Aspirations

After playing in baseball hotbeds like Boston and St. Louis, the Savannah Bananas are now looking to expand their reach. “It is a big deal,’’ said Jared Orton, regarding their debut in The Bronx. Following their successful weekend, Orton hopes for more appearances in The Bronx and at Citi Field. He highlighted the importance of their brand: “We want to entertain the fans and give them something to talk about... Make baseball fun." Last weekend featured Trevor Hoffman closing out a game in San Diego, and Orton promised future surprises.

Behind the Scenes: Creating a Unique Experience

Initially, there were challenges in convincing major league teams to let them use their spring training ballparks. "It’s scary to open your facility for anyone,’’ said Orton. “They play baseball there every night and we’re gonna have this crazy brand of baseball, with a guy on stilts and a dancing first base coach. How was that gonna go?” However, after showcasing their level of care and commitment to the game and performance, teams were won over. While preparations are called "rehearsals" instead of batting practice, the team strives for excellence in their entertainment.

Savannah Bananas Owner Jesse Cole on the Team's Success

Jesse Cole, the owner of the Savannah Bananas, has spoken about the origins of the team, the importance of elevating the in-game fan experience, business profitability, and the future of the organization. The Savannah Bananas continue to find new ways to engage fans and make baseball more enjoyable for a wider audience, solidifying their place as a unique and innovative force in the world of sports and entertainment.
