The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has issued a stark warning to motorists travelling on the N1 North before Winnie Mandela Drive near Fourways following a tragic accident involving a truck and two cars. This devastating incident has resulted in the loss of two lives, prompting authorities to close all lanes in the area as they work to clear the scene.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed the fatalities and provided details about the crash that unfolded earlier today. “We can confirm a fatal accident on the N1 North before Winnie Mandela Drive involving a truck and two other vehicles. The truck overturned, spilling its load of cooking oil onto the roadway,” Fihla stated.
Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, alongside law enforcement officers, are currently on-site addressing the aftermath of the collision. However, the closure of all lanes has led to significant traffic disruptions, with long delays anticipated for commuters in the region.
“Motorists should expect severe delays and are strongly advised to exercise caution and to use alternative routes,” Fihla urged, highlighting the need for both patience and prudence as efforts continue to restore normal traffic flow.
The safety of the public remains a top priority for authorities as they urge drivers to stay tuned for updates on the situation and to avoid the area if possible.
