Welsh Government Accused of

Welsh Government Spending Under Scrutiny: 'Millions Wasted Oversees'?

The Welsh government is facing criticism over its spending habits, with allegations of "wasting millions oversees." Darren Millar, leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Senedd, has challenged the Welsh Labour government, questioning the allocation of taxpayer money to projects outside of Wales. This has sparked a debate about financial priorities and the government's responsibility to the Welsh people.

Millar's Accusations: Overseas Spending vs. Domestic Needs

Darren Millar specifically questioned investments in "mini embassies in exotic locations," "solar-powered boats for the Wampis tribe in Peru," and "gender-equal tree planting in Uganda." He argues that these funds could be better utilized to address pressing issues within Wales. He asks,

"How on earth can you bleat on about being underfunded from Westminster and not getting enough funding from Westminster when you are wasting millions overseas that could and should be spent on people in Wales?"

Welsh Government's Defense: Addressing UK Government Shortcomings

Eluned Morgan, responding on behalf of the Welsh government, defended the spending, stating that it was necessary to compensate for the lack of action and funding from the UK government, particularly during years of austerity under the Conservatives. She cited the example of broadband rollout, saying,

"Broadband, the roll-out of broadband - not the Welsh government's responsibility, but we had to make up for the fact that the UK Tory government was not doing its job."
She further asserted that without Welsh government intervention, "hundreds of thousands of homes in Wales today [would not be] linked to broadband."

Controversy Over "Nation of Sanctuary" Policy

Darren Millar also called for the "nation of sanctuary" policy to be scrapped, claiming it provides funding and services, including for "illegal immigrants." He emphasized that "tens of millions of pounds" allocated to this policy "could and should be spent on people in Wales and our public services." This policy has become a focal point of the debate, raising questions about the balance between supporting refugees and asylum seekers and prioritizing the needs of the Welsh population.

Government Response: Humanitarian Obligations and Accusations of "Dog-Whistle Politics"

Eluned Morgan rebuffed Millar's criticism, accusing him of engaging in "dog-whistle politics" and attempting to compete with Reform UK. She argued that the majority of the "nation of sanctuary" funds have been directed towards supporting refugees from Ukraine. She reminded Millar that he was a vocal advocate for helping Ukrainians, stating,

"You were in the front line of people telling us that we had to hold out our hand and help the people of Ukraine. You were the first person there."
The refugee and asylum seeker plan (nation of sanctuary) was first published on 1 January 2019.
