France’s Prime Minister Lecornu Resigns
Sébastien Lecornu's resignation makes him the shortest-serving prime minister in the history of the Fifth Republic.
France’s Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has resigned following less than a month in office.
Lecornu replaced his predecessor, Francois Bayrou, on September 9 to become France’s fourth prime minister in a year during a prolonged period of political instability. His resignation makes him the shortest-serving prime minister in the history of the Fifth Republic, which started in 1958.
Lecornu was forced out just hours after forming his cabinet, having lost the support of conservatives who hold 50 seats and who objected to his choice for defense minister. The move plunged the country into a political crisis and left French President Emmanuel Macron with few options.
