'Kingdom of Kubala' Evicted: Self-Proclaimed African Tribe Removed from Scottish Borders
A self-proclaimed African tribe, known as the Kingdom of Kubala, has been evicted from a woodland area near Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders. The group, consisting of three individuals, had been residing in the area since May and were removed by police and immigration enforcement officials on Thursday, October 2, 2025. The individuals involved have also been barred from returning to the private land they previously occupied.
The Individuals Involved
The Kingdom of Kubala consists of Kofi Offeh, 36, who identifies as King Atehene; his wife, Jean Gasho, 43, who goes by Queen Nandi; and Kaura Taylor, 21, who is referred to as "handmaiden" Asnat. Kofi Offeh is originally from Ghana, while Jean Gasho is from Zimbabwe. Kaura Taylor is a 21-year-old woman from Texas, USA, who was reported missing by her family. Her mother, Melba Whitehead, believes her daughter has been "brainwashed" into joining the group.
Eviction and Arrests
The eviction, which was streamed live on TikTok, showed Offeh and Taylor being taken into vans by authorities. It is understood that Offeh and Taylor were arrested on suspicion of immigration offences. Prior to the eviction, the group had been served with a notice to leave the private land they initially occupied. They subsequently moved to a neighbouring plot of land owned by the local council. However, a court order was later granted, banning them from council-owned land as well.
Legal Proceedings and Community Reaction
Selkirk Sheriff Court ruled that the trio could not return to the original plot of private land. Jedburgh councillor Scott Hamilton stated that the site is currently being cleared by the council and expressed that the eviction was "a good result for the community and for them as well in terms of the outcome." Police Scotland confirmed that they assisted partner agencies in the Oxnam Road area of Jedburgh.
Claims and Counterclaims
The group claims that the land is rightfully theirs and that they are reclaiming what was taken from their ancestors 400 years ago. However, these claims have been met with skepticism from locals, including Councillor Hamilton. Furthermore, Kaura Taylor's mother has publicly appealed for her daughter's return to the United States, alleging that she was groomed online and is now under the influence of a "cult." The Home Office has declined to comment on the matter while an investigation is ongoing.
