US Citizen Deported from Bali for Hosting "Intimacy Mastery Retreat"
An American citizen, identified only as JRG, was deported from Bali, Indonesia on September 18, 2025, for violating Indonesian immigration laws. She had organized a sexual wellness retreat at a rented villa in the popular Seminyak area while on a tourist visa, a violation of local regulations.
Details of the "Intimacy Mastery Retreat"
JRG arrived in Bali on September 4, 2025, using a Visa on Arrival (VoA) intended for tourism. According to Ngurah Rai Immigration Office head Winarko, commercial activities are strictly prohibited under this type of visa. The "Intimacy Mastery Retreat" took place from September 4 to 8 and offered private classes on intimate relationships, emotional closeness, and sexual practices. Participants reportedly paid at least US$7,000 each, and attendees came from various countries.
Investigation and Arrest
The investigation into JRG's activities was initiated after local residents reported "suspicious activities" at the villa. Investigators discovered the details of the Intimacy Mastery Retreat. She was arrested by immigration officers at Ngurah Rai Airport while attempting to board a flight to Jakarta. Following her arrest, she was deported to Los Angeles via Taipei.
Crackdown on Immigration Violations in Bali
This incident comes amid rising concerns over immigration violations in Bali, including tourists overstaying visas and running unlicensed businesses. In response, the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Services has formed a special task force of 100 officers to patrol popular tourist areas like Seminyak, Canggu, and Nusa Dua. Immigration Minister Agus Andrianto stated that the initiative aims to deter violations, protect local communities, and uphold stability, following directives from President Prabowo Subianto.
Authorities' Warning
Winarko emphasized that foreign nationals are expected to comply with Indonesian immigration laws and warned that any misuse of visa privileges would be dealt with firmly. The authorities are intensifying monitoring of foreign nationals' activities in Bali to ensure compliance and respect for the country’s legal norms.
