Deadly Terror Attack at Manchester Synagogue on Yom Kippur Sparks Israeli Condemnation and Demands for UK Action on Antisemitism

Terror Attack at Manchester Synagogue During Yom Kippur Sparks Condemnation and Calls for Action

A deadly terror attack occurred at a synagogue in Manchester, UK, during Yom Kippur, Judaism's holiest day. The attacker, who was shot dead by police, killed two people and seriously wounded four others. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation and renewed calls for action against antisemitism.

Details of the Attack

Greater Manchester Police responded to a call at 9:31 AM local time reporting a car being driven towards people outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue and a man being stabbed. Six minutes later, police declared a "major incident" and fatally shot the attacker at 9:38 AM. The attacker was wearing a vest with the appearance of an explosive device, causing delays in confirming his death. Two people have been arrested in connection with the attack. Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson praised the bravery of Jewish worshippers, on-site security, and police for preventing further casualties.

Reactions and Condemnation

Political leaders, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer and members of the Royal Family, swiftly condemned the attack. Starmer ordered increased security at Jewish sites nationwide and returned to Downing Street to chair an emergency security meeting. He expressed solidarity with the Jewish community, promising to guarantee their security. Opposition Leader Kemi Badeoch questioned what more needs to be done to prevent such attacks. Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, announced extra police deployments to Jewish neighborhoods in the capital.

Israel's Response and Accusations

Israel has strongly condemned the attack, with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar accusing British authorities of allowing antisemitism to persist. He stated that "blatant and rampant antisemitic and anti-Israeli incitement" has become widespread in the UK. He demanded "effective action" against antisemitism from the Starmer Government. Prime Minister Netanyahu connected the attack to his warnings at the UN about the dangers of weakness in the face of terrorism.

Rising Antisemitism and Community Concerns

Like in Australia, anti-semitic incidents have been on the rise in the UK since October 7. Manchester is home to the UK's largest Jewish population outside of London. The Community Security Trust (CST), which monitors antisemitic incidents, reported 1521 incidents in the first six months of 2025, the second-highest number on record. The CST urged Jews not to congregate outside community sites and to keep doors closed at all times.

International Condemnation and Solidarity

World leaders and communities around the globe expressed shock and grief. King Charles III and Queen Camilla conveyed their shock and sadness. In Australia, Opposition Leader Sussan Ley led condemnation, expressing "grief" and "shock" at the "cowardly, evil attack". Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also condemned the attacks, sending condolences to the people of Manchester.
