Braves GM Anthopoulos Kicks Off Manager Search After Snitker's Exit, No Candidates Yet

Braves Begin Search for New Manager Following Brian Snitker's Departure

The Atlanta Braves are officially on the hunt for a new manager after Brian Snitker announced his departure after 10 seasons. General Manager Alex Anthopoulos stated on Saturday that he aims to move quickly in the search but has yet to conduct any interviews.

Anthopoulos's Approach to the Search

Anthopoulos emphasized that he respected Snitker’s decision and avoided compiling a list of candidates prematurely. He reiterated that the opportunity to return in 2026 was available to Snitker, stating, “He would have been back. That’s why we were going to wait and give him the time he needed.” Anthopoulos has stated he wants to finish some internal tasks prior to starting the search.

Regarding potential candidates, Anthopoulos stated “we do not currently have a list” of candidates.

Possible Candidates and Coaching Staff

Former Braves catcher and Chicago Cubs skipper David Ross expressed interest in managing again, noting that managing the Braves "would be amazing." Two coaches from Snitker’s staff have prior managerial experience: bench coach Walt Weiss, former manager of the Colorado Rockies, and third base coach Fredi González, a former manager with Atlanta and the Marlins.

  • Fredi González: Former Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins Manager

Speculation has also included former Braves infielder Mark DeRosa and Cubs bench coach Ryan Flaherty as potential candidates. Skip Schumaker, former Marlins manager, was recently named the Texas Rangers’ skipper. Anthopoulos noted the number of managerial openings, stating "Before Skip Schumaker was named, there were eight openings."

Snitker's Legacy and Future Role

Brian Snitker led the Braves to the 2021 World Series championship. He concluded his managerial tenure with a record of 811-688, placing him third in franchise history for wins, trailing only Bobby Cox and Frank Selee. Snitker led the Braves to seven postseasons, including six NL East titles. He will transition into an advisory role and be inducted into the team’s hall of fame next season.

Anthopoulos confirmed a five-year agreement with Snitker to serve as a senior advisor.

Timeline and Challenges

Anthopoulos acknowledged the potential challenges in the hiring process due to numerous managerial openings across the league. He stated he hopes to make the hire as soon as possible. Anthopoulos noted "Of course as soon as possible with so many openings...You’d love to be able to do it sooner than later."
