Feast of San Gennaro: A 99-Year Tradition in Little Italy
The Feast of San Gennaro, an iconic celebration of Italian food and culture, has returned to Little Italy in Manhattan for its 99th anniversary. This 11-day festival transforms Mulberry Street into a vibrant display of traditions, entertainment, and delicious cuisine.
Celebrating Italian Heritage and Faith
The annual feast honors San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, Italy. The tradition began in 1926 when Neapolitan immigrants, settling in the Lower East Side, organized a one-day block party to commemorate their patron saint. It has since evolved into a multi-day event showcasing the rich heritage of Italian people and their history. The feast runs until Sunday, September 21, 2025.
Highlights of the 2025 Feast
Festivities kicked off with the blessing of the stands, a customary tradition where vendors and businesses receive blessings. The Grand Procession, a highlight of the celebration, will take place on Saturday. This year's Grand Marshal is actor Joe Piscopo. Attendees can expect traditional Italian food vendors, live entertainment, and various cultural performances throughout the festival.
Navigating the Feast: Street Closures
Several streets in Little Italy will be closed to accommodate the festivities. These closures are in effect from September 11-21. Mott Street and Mulberry Street, between Canal Street and East Houston Street, will be affected, along with many others. For a complete list, see below.
Other Fall Festivals in NYC: Oktoberfest
Alongside the Feast of San Gennaro, New York City is also gearing up for Oktoberfest celebrations. These events offer a taste of German culture with beer, pretzels, and polka dancing. Oktoberfest events are taking place across the five boroughs, providing ample opportunities for revelry.
