向太 Reveals the Real Reason Behind Zhang Yimou and Gong Li's Breakup
Hong Kong film producer Chen Lan, also known as 向太, recently shared insights into the breakup of renowned director Zhang Yimou and actress Gong Li, revealing that differing views on marriage were the core issue. The couple, who were significant figures in Chinese cinema, ended their eight-year relationship, sparking much speculation at the time. 向太's account sheds new light on their separation.
Marriage Expectations and Unmet Promises
向太 explained that Gong Li, nearing 30 at the time, desired marriage, while Zhang Yimou hesitated to commit. This difference in perspective ultimately led to their split. According to 向太, Gong Li sought a sense of security and commitment that Zhang Yimou was unwilling to provide at that stage in his life.
向太's Personal Involvement and Zhang Yimou's Reaction
向太, a close friend to both Zhang Yimou and Gong Li, recounted being caught in the middle of their relationship struggles. She recalled a tearful phone call from Gong Li expressing her frustration with Zhang Yimou's reluctance to marry her. 向太 also mentioned that Zhang Yimou was devastated when Gong Li pursued a relationship with someone else and even called her crying from Japan where he was working on post-production.

Reportedly, Zhang Yimou believed that "two people in love don't need a marriage certificate." His reluctance was also influenced by his previous divorce, which took six to seven years to resolve. While 向太 attempted to mediate, businessman Huang Hexiang actively pursued Gong Li, eventually becoming her first husband. 向太 felt she witnessed Zhang Yimou's conviction that Gong Li wouldn't leave, only to be proven wrong.

Years later, 向太 arranged for Zhang Yimou and Gong Li to meet again and even considered rekindling their relationship. However, both had moved on with their lives. Gong Li married French musician Jean-Michel Jarre, while Zhang Yimou married Chen Ting, with whom he has three children. Despite their past, both found their own happiness.
