NFL Injury Report: Burrow Out, Daniels Hurt, McCarthy Sidelined
Week 2 of the NFL season was filled with exciting matchups, but also brought a wave of injuries impacting key quarterbacks. The most significant news is that Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals will require surgery after suffering a toe injury, sidelining him for an extended period. Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders and J.J. McCarthy of the Minnesota Vikings also sustained injuries, leaving their Week 3 statuses uncertain.
Quarterback Carousel: Injuries Plague Teams
The Cincinnati Bengals secured a 31-27 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the win came at a steep cost. Joe Burrow injured his toe in the second quarter and did not return. He will need surgery and is expected to miss at least three months, potentially impacting the Bengals' playoff hopes. Jake Browning stepped in for Burrow, completing 21 of 32 passes for 241 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.
The Minnesota Vikings are also facing quarterback woes. Head coach Kevin O'Connell announced that J.J. McCarthy is likely to miss their Week 3 game due to an ankle sprain. The Washington Commanders' Jayden Daniels is also questionable after reportedly spraining his knee. The Vikings are already depleted with injuries to other key players, including offensive linemen Ryan Kelly and Justin Skule who are in concussion protocol, and running back Aaron Jones who is likely out with a hamstring injury. Left tackle Christian Darrisaw has not yet returned from knee surgery.
Justin Fields, quarterback for the New York Jets, left Week 2 after being diagnosed with a concussion and is now in concussion protocol. He was replaced by backup Tyrod Taylor. The San Francisco 49ers were without starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who is dealing with a toe injury.
Other Notable Injuries and Updates
The San Francisco 49ers are also dealing with other significant injuries. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is expected to be out for several more weeks due to a knee injury, and tight end George Kittle is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Jauan Jennings entered Week 2 as questionable with a shoulder injury.
Controversy Surrounds the "Tush Push"
The Philadelphia Eagles' and Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl rematch was not without controversy. Referees did not call several apparent false starts on the Eagles' "tush push" attempts, reigniting debate about the play's legality. The proposal to ban the "tush push" narrowly failed at the league meetings this offseason.
The Eagles commit about 5 penalties during a Tush Push, and the NFL just doesn’t call them. Center is offsides, guards false start. Ban the play.
