Miami Beach Approves Museum to Replace Regal Cinema on Lincoln Road
The city of Miami Beach has approved a plan to replace the Regal Cinema on Lincoln Road with a new museum. The decision follows a recent meeting where the city planning board heard public comment.
Public Input and Planning Board Deliberations
On September 9th, the city planning board listened to public comments before making their decision. Among those who spoke was Steve Burke, a former comedian and mayoral candidate, who is now the entrepreneur behind the proposed Superhuman Museum.
Theater's Departure Not Forced
During the meeting, board member Brian Elias emphasized that the Regal Cinema is leaving voluntarily and not being forced out by the city's decision. Elias stated, “The letters from the residents would suggest that we have the power to keep the movie theater there, and we don't. Because I hate to make the public think we're disregarding their concerns and emails.”
Public Sentiment to Save the Cinema
The planning board acknowledged receiving numerous letters, reportedly thousands, from residents expressing support for intervening to save the movie theater. However, board members clarified that Regal is currently leasing the space on a month-to-month basis and has already made plans to vacate the premises.
