Prabowo Subianto Orders Military to Protect Indonesia's Natural Resources from Foreign Exploitation

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has directed the military to safeguard the nation's extensive natural resources against exploitation by foreign entities. He accused these groups of "stealing" and "smuggling" the country's assets, emphasizing the need for robust protection.

Strengthening National Resource Security

President Prabowo emphasized that the military must collaborate with law enforcement, as well as central and regional governments, to ensure these resources are utilized to alleviate poverty. He delivered this message at a ceremony commemorating the military’s 80th anniversary in Jakarta on October 5th.

“It’s no secret that our natural resources are abundant and we, for hundreds of years, have been disturbed, invaded by foreign powers,” Prabowo stated to the gathered troops from the army, navy, and air force. “Up until today, until this very second, these irresponsible powers are still stealing, smuggling and taking much of our resources.”

Economic Growth and Military Expansion

Since assuming office in 2024, Prabowo, a former general, has aggressively pursued tighter control over key sectors of the Indonesian economy, ranging from natural resources to fiscal and monetary policy. This push is aligned with his administration's goal of achieving an 8% economic growth rate, a level unseen in decades.

The President has expanded the military’s influence into civilian programs, increased defense spending, accelerated revisions to military laws, and appointed senior officers to leadership roles in state-owned enterprises. These enterprises include those managing over 1,000,000 hectares of oil palm plantations seized by the state.

Military's Evolving Role

The Indonesian armed forces have recently begun distributing military-produced medicines and vitamins to support the President’s priority social programs. The anniversary ceremony on October 5th, held at the National Monument, was attended by approximately 133,000 soldiers, making it the largest celebration of its kind, according to local news outlet Kompas.

Prabowo also urged the soldiers to prioritize advancements in technology and science, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. “Follow the developments and make sure that you’re not left behind. If needed, replace obsolete personnel with the right persons in the interest of the nation,” he advised.
