Man Fatally Shot After Confrontation with ICE Officers in Chicago Suburb
A man identified as Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, an undocumented immigrant, was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during a traffic stop in Franklin Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, on Friday. The incident occurred when Villegas-Gonzalez allegedly resisted arrest and dragged the officer with his vehicle, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Details of the Incident
According to the DHS, the traffic stop was part of "targeted law enforcement activity." During the stop, Villegas-Gonzalez reportedly attempted to drive his vehicle at the officers. An ICE officer was struck and dragged a significant distance by the vehicle. Fearing for his life, the officer discharged his weapon, striking Villegas-Gonzalez.
Villegas-Gonzalez was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The ICE officer sustained severe injuries but is reported to be in stable condition.
Official Statements
Tricia McLaughlin, Homeland Security assistant secretary, issued a statement regarding the incident. "We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer. He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement," she said. McLaughlin also criticized "viral social media videos and activists encouraging illegal aliens to resist law enforcement," claiming they "not only spread misinformation but also undermine public safety, as well as the safety of our officers and those being apprehended."
Investigation and Further Developments
The incident is currently under investigation. Further details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses. The ICE confirmed the officer is in stable condition. Villegas-Gonzalez had a history of reckless driving, according to DHS.
