Patriotic Alliance (PA) Deputy President, Kenny Kunene, says he expects to be reinstated as Johannesburg’s MMC for Transport, after an independent investigation cleared him of any wrongdoing.
The investigation was launched after Kunene was found at the Sandton residence of Katiso “KT” Molefe in July, when police arrived to arrest the controversial businessman. Molefe is accused of orchestrating the 2022 murder of popular musician Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka and two of his bodyguards.
Kunene later explained that he was at Molefe’s home to accompany a young journalist from his online news platform, Africa News Global, who was there to conduct an interview.
Following the incident, Kunene was suspended by the Patriotic Alliance and subsequently resigned from his position as Johannesburg’s MMC for Transport.
Speaking to Ynews sister channel, eNCA, Kunene expressed confidence in the outcome of the investigation.
“Three senior investigators interviewed me, witnesses I provided, as well as those they independently identified. I have no doubt that they were satisfied with the facts — which is why they cleared me. The fact that Molefe’s side has not yet been heard doesn’t concern me. He will respond when given the opportunity,” Kunene stated.
In response to the developments, PA leader Gayton McKenzie has issued a stern ultimatum to the ANC, to reinstate Kunene within seven days warning that failure to do so will lead to the PA to withdraw from all its local government coalitions with the ANC across the country.
X village made me understand this African Proverb in the PIC. What I appreciate is that dust gets blown away by the wind and I remain unscathed. My name is God ordained. Governance expert, Leo Maphosa, criticized the PA’s ultimatum, calling it opportunistic and politically driven rather than rooted in service delivery.
Speaking to Ynews, Maphosa said the ANC now finds itself in a precarious position.
Political commentator, Goodenough Mashego, was equally scathing, arguing that governance through ultimatums has historically failed to yield meaningful results. He also accused McKenzie of hypocrisy.
“McKenzie isn’t stating his own position as a national minister. He’s only mentioning local and provincial coalition threats. If he were serious, he’d threaten to pull the PA out of the national coalition too — which would mean giving up his ministerial perks,” said Mashego.
He further referenced McKenzie’s past controversies.
Kenny Kunene on Face of the Nation just confirmed that if he is not reinstated as the MMC of Transport in Joburg in 7 days, then all PA deployees will resign from all coalitions.
