Upington Father Sentenced to Three Life Terms for Raping 14-Year-Old Daughter

Upington Man Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Raping Daughter

A 45-year-old man from Upington, Northern Cape, has been sentenced to three life terms in prison for the repeated rape of his 14-year-old daughter. The horrific crimes occurred in 2016 when the daughter was staying with her father.

Details of the Abuse

According to Mojalefa Senokoatsane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, the abuse began in April 2016. The court heard how the accused entered his daughter's bedroom and initiated the first act of rape. Further incidents occurred in November 2016, with the daughter being moved from her bed to the veranda where she was again sexually assaulted.

The abuse was not limited to rape; the father also physically assaulted his daughter when she refused to perform sexual acts on him. Fear prevented the victim from reporting the crimes immediately.

"Through the testimony of the victim, the court heard how the accused used his private parts, rubbing them against the thighs of the victim, before raping her." - Mojalefa Senokoatsane, NPA Spokesperson.

Unsent Letters and the Path to Justice

The victim was too afraid to disclose the abuse, fearing her father's threats that he would go to jail and she would be taken from her family. Instead of reporting the abuse, she documented her experiences in a journal of unsent letters. These letters later played a critical role in the prosecution, providing crucial evidence that substantiated her testimony.

Senokoatsane emphasized the significance of record-keeping in abuse cases, particularly when victims are initially unable to report the crimes. Eventually, the victim confided in her mother, leading to police involvement. When the father insisted that his daughter return to his home, her mother contacted the police, prompting an investigation and ultimately the daughter's disclosure.

Prosecutor's Condemnation and Sentencing

Prosecutor Friedle du Plessis condemned the father's repulsive behavior, highlighting how he continued to demand his daughter's return even after the assaults. Du Plessis stated that the father's actions "destroyed the spirit of a young, vibrant child."

The man was sentenced to three life terms for the rapes, plus an additional three months imprisonment for physical assault. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of child sexual abuse and the importance of supporting victims.
