Crime Intelligence Boss Dumisani Khumalo Falls Ill at Madlanga Commission, Proceedings Adjourned
South Africans received reassurance from National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola that Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo is in good spirits and under medical care after falling unwell during a key inquiry. The incident led to the postponement of Wednesday’s session at the Madlanga Commission, where Khumalo was set to continue his explosive testimony on alleged criminal syndicates infiltrating the justice system. As concerns swirl online about his safety amid the high-stakes revelations, officials stress it’s a health matter with no signs of foul play. This development comes amid growing public scrutiny of the commission’s probe into deep-rooted corruption, highlighting the pressures on witnesses exposing sensitive issues.
The Madlanga Commission, chaired by retired Constitutional Court judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga, has been delving into claims of political interference and criminal networks within law enforcement. Khumalo’s evidence, including WhatsApp messages from a former officer, has already sparked debates about accountability and reform in South Africa’s security clusters.
Khumalo’s Sudden Illness and Commission Adjournment
Khumalo was scheduled to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday to continue his testimony into the alleged infiltration of the criminal justice system by criminal syndicates. But Khumalo left the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria just after 9 on Wednesday morning, after he started feeling unwell.
The commission adjourned for the day, with chairperson Justice Madlanga announcing the halt due to Khumalo’s condition. A new date for his return will be shared once confirmed, keeping the inquiry’s timeline in flux.
This marks the second consecutive day of disruptions, following a brief pause on Tuesday when Khumalo also reported not feeling well but continued briefly. He is the fourth witness in the probe, which began public hearings in mid-September 2025 after being established by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July.
Masemola’s Assurance on Khumalo’s Health
National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has assured South Africans that Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo is in good spirits and receiving medical attention.
“General Masemola is in contact with the senior officer and confirms that he is in good spirits and taking health advice from his physician. The general’s health is receiving priority and the Madlanga Commission will be kept abreast of all developments pertaining to his condition as well as when he will be available to continue with his testimony,” said police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe.
Masemola’s update came swiftly to address public worries, emphasising that Khumalo’s well-being takes precedence. Officials have shared no further details on his ailment, but sources indicate it’s not linked to any security threats.
Background on Khumalo’s Testimony and the Commission
Khumalo, a key figure in national security, has been at the centre of the commission’s hearings. On Monday and Tuesday, he testified about WhatsApp messages from the phone of former police official Vusimusi Matlala, revealing alleged “special relationships” between Matlala and high-ranking officers. These chats suggested interference in investigations and politically motivated actions.
His revelations included claims of his own arrest in June 2025 being orchestrated to silence him after refusing corrupt involvement. The commission, probing criminality, political meddling, and corruption in the justice system, has heard from top brass like Masemola and KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Established after Mkhwanazi’s public allegations of syndicates crippling police ops, the inquiry aims to recommend fixes for a system riddled with inefficiencies. Delays like this one underscore the challenges in high-profile probes, where witness health and safety are paramount.
Public Reactions and Speculation on Social Media
The news sparked a flurry of concern online, with many users speculating about foul play given the sensitive nature of Khumalo’s evidence. Posts on platforms like X drew parallels to other mysterious incidents, urging checks on his safety amid fears of threats from exposed “cartels.”
One user warned: “Is Dumisani Khumalo safe where he is, please check on him, gape he’s dealing with evil people here.” Others echoed calls for protection, referencing the commission’s role in uncovering deep corruption.
However, official statements dismiss any sinister angles, focusing solely on health. Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels assured that safety measures are in place for all witnesses, aiming to ease public anxiety.
