South African Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa Dies in Paris Under Investigation

Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition, Mzwandile Masina, has extended heartfelt condolences to the family of Nathi Mthethwa, as well as to the African National Congress (ANC).

“We would like to extend our condolences to the family, the membership of the African National Congress, and the people of South Africa whom he served diligently,” Masina said.

Mthethwa, who was serving as South Africa’s Ambassador to France, died after falling from the 22nd floor of a hotel in Paris. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation.

He had been reported missing a day before his body was discovered.

President Cyril Ramaphosa also expressed his sorrow at Mthethwa’s passing, offering condolences to his wife and family.

“The untimely passing of Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa is a moment of deep grief, in which Government and citizens stand beside the Mthethwa family. Ambassador Mthethwa served our nation in diverse capacities during a lifetime that has ended prematurely and traumatically,” Ramaphosa said.

The ANC has asked for privacy during this difficult time, requesting that the public allow the investigation to proceed without speculation.

“We believe that as soon as the information comes to the fore, relevant authorities will then be able to inform us as to what happened, so that we can also inform the nation,” added Masina.
