Tehran: Iran has executed seven people in two separate cases, marking another day of multiple hangings in the country.
According to Iran’s judiciary news agency Mizan, six individuals were executed in the city of Khorram in Khuzestan province. They were accused of carrying out a deadly bomb attack on a security convoy that killed four security personnel.
In a separate case, a Kurdish man named Saman Mohammadi Khayarah was executed in the city of Sanandaj, Kurdistan province. He was convicted of killing a pro-government Sunni cleric, Mamousta Sheikh al-Islam, in 2009.
Mizan also claimed that the executed individuals had links to Israel a claim strongly rejected by human rights organizations, which argue that Iran often labels political dissent or ethnic unrest as “foreign interference.”
Human rights groups have condemned the executions, saying they reflect Tehran’s growing use of the death penalty to silence opposition, particularly in minority regions.
Reports indicate that Iran has already executed more than 1,000 people this year, many accused of spying for Israel. The wave of executions followed Israeli attacks that killed several top Iranian military commanders and nuclear scientists.
Last year, Iran executed over 950 people, while in 2023 the number exceeded 850. The country remains among the world’s top three executors, alongside Saudi Arabia and China.
Moreover, The United States has imposed sanctions on what it described as an Iranian weapons procurement network backing Tehran’s ballistic missile program, following the UN’s move to reinstate restrictions, the Treasury Department said Wednesday.
Officials in Washington said the action targets 21 firms and 17 people accused of “posing a significant threat to US forces in the Middle East, commercial shipping, and civilians.”
According to the announcement, the move comes after the United Nations’ September 27 decision to reapply sanctions and controls on Iran’s nuclear, missile, and other weapons-related programs.
These designations mark the first steps taken by the Trump administration since the UN “snapback” sanctions were confirmed last week, increasing pressure on Tehran’s missile and nuclear development.
The Treasury Department noted that the sanctioned networks operate across multiple countries, including Iran itself, along with Hong Kong, China, and Germany.
“President Trump’s leadership ensures we deny the regime weapons that could advance its malign agenda,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated.
