Shedeur Sanders Refused Ravens Draft Pick to Seek Sooner Playing Time, Sources Say

Shedeur Sanders Reportedly Declined Draft by Ravens to Avoid Backing Up Lamar Jackson

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Baltimore Ravens had plans to draft quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. However, Sanders reportedly informed the team that he preferred not to be drafted by them.

Sanders' Concerns About Playing Time

Sources indicate that Shedeur Sanders was hesitant to join a team where he would likely remain on the bench behind two-time MVP Lamar Jackson. Knowing that Jackson was firmly entrenched as the starting quarterback for the Ravens, Sanders sought an opportunity with a team where he might have a quicker path to playing time.

Ravens' Draft Decision and Sanders' Fate

After receiving word of Sanders' disinterest, the Ravens opted to draft offensive lineman Carson Vinson with the No. 141 pick. Subsequently, the Cleveland Browns traded up to select Sanders with the No. 144 pick. Ironically, the Browns and Ravens are scheduled to face each other, adding an intriguing layer to the situation.

Sanders' Current Situation with the Browns

Despite his desire for playing time, Sanders currently finds himself third on the Browns' depth chart, behind veteran Joe Flacco and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. The Browns cleared some space in their quarterback room by trading Kenny Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders and releasing Tyler Huntley. However, Sanders is still competing for snaps.

Preseason Performance and Practice Role

Sanders had an impressive debut in the Browns' preseason opener but missed the second game due to an oblique injury. He faced challenges in the preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams, getting sacked five times. Currently, Sanders, Gabriel, and practice squad quarterback Bailey Zappe are running the scout team in practice, preparing the Browns' defense for upcoming opponents.

Could Sanders Regret His Decision?

While Sanders ultimately landed in Cleveland, some wonder if he now regrets declining the opportunity to be drafted by the Ravens. Despite Jackson's secure position, injuries are always a possibility. Moreover, the Ravens have a history of success that the Browns have struggled to match. Whether or not Sanders harbors any second thoughts, it's unlikely he would publicly admit it.
