Luxembourg's Grand Duke Henri Abdicates, Son Guillaume Ascends Throne
In a historic ceremony, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, 70, abdicated the throne in favor of his son, Guillaume, 43. The event, held on Friday at the Grand Ducal Palace, marked the end of Henri's 25-year reign and the beginning of Guillaume's as the new head of state.
A Historic Ceremony
The glitzy ceremony was attended by numerous dignitaries, including members of the Dutch and Belgian royal families. Following the abdication, Guillaume swore an oath to uphold Luxembourg's constitution before the 60 elected members of the parliament, known as the Chamber of Deputies. A lavish gala dinner in Luxembourg City is planned, with attendance expected from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Grand Duke Henri's decision to step down, announced in December 2024, makes him the second European monarch to abdicate in the past year, following Queen Margrethe of Denmark's decision to pass the crown to her son, Frederik.
Guillaume's Role and Challenges Ahead
While the role of Grand Duke is largely ceremonial, Guillaume will act as a symbolic head of state and represent Luxembourg internationally. His primary functions will include enacting laws and performing representative duties. The new Grand Duke inherits a country that has faced numerous challenges, including the 2008 financial crisis, the most significant economic shock since the 1970s.
In his final Christmas speech, Henri highlighted the challenges ahead for Guillaume and Luxembourg, emphasizing the importance of addressing climate change, geopolitical tensions, wars, and economic upheaval.
Luxembourg: A Leading Financial Hub
Luxembourg, despite being Europe's seventh-smallest country, has emerged as a leading financial hub and plays a central role in the European Union. It hosts major institutions such as the European Court of Justice and the European Investment Bank. Guillaume will be Luxembourg's seventh grand duke since 1890, when the modern monarchy was established, marking the continuation of the world's last remaining grand duchy.
The Royal Lineage and Education
Henri received his education in France, Switzerland, and at Sandhurst military academy in Berkshire, England. Guillaume followed a similar path, studying in London, Switzerland, France, and at Sandhurst before working in Belgian, German, and Spanish firms. Guillaume is married to Belgian-born Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy, and they have two sons, Charles and François.
