Helen Zille Announced as DA Mayoral Candidate for Johannesburg, Vowing to Tackle City's Crises

Helen Zille Announces Mayoral Candidacy for Johannesburg in 2026

Former Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille has been announced as the Democratic Alliance (DA) candidate for mayor of Johannesburg in the 2026 local government elections. The announcement took place on Saturday, 20 September 2025, in Soweto, marking a significant shift as Zille aims to lead South Africa’s largest city.

Zille's "Daughter of Johannesburg" Campaign

At 74 years old, Zille launched her campaign by emphasizing her deep roots in Johannesburg, referring to herself as a "daughter of Johannesburg." She highlighted her birth in Hillbrow and early life in Berea and Orange Grove, underscoring her connection to the city. Her aim is to reverse the perceived decline of Johannesburg under the current administration, led by Dada Morero of the ANC.

"Many of you know me as an ex-mayor and an ex-premier, a mother and a gogo. I am here today as a daughter of Johannesburg, where I took my first breath, took my first steps and took my first words. It’s here where I rented my first flat and found my first job. I fell in love here. And I fell in love with this city and all her people." - Helen Zille

This new campaign persona marks a departure from Zille's recent conservative stance, focusing instead on her personal history and dedication to revitalizing Johannesburg.

DA's Strategy and Ramaphosa's Endorsement

The DA believes it has strong support in Johannesburg, Tshwane, and across Gauteng. The party regularly conducts polls to inform its election strategy. An unexpected boost came from President Cyril Ramaphosa, who publicly praised DA-run municipalities for their superior service delivery, a statement John Steenhuisen, leader of the DA, has since used to great effect in his campaigns.

Solly Msimanga, the DA's Gauteng leader, emphasized the party's focus on practical improvements in people's lives, contrasting it with the perceived shortcomings of the ANC in governing the city. However, some South Africans have expressed concern about the age of the candidate and the lack of local leaders, especially given that Johannesburg is a relatively young city.

Challenges and Opponents

Zille faces significant challenges, including a severe water crisis, infrastructure decay, and financial mismanagement. The city reportedly diverted funds intended for water repairs to cover operational costs. She also enters the race against other notable figures like Kenny Kunene of the Patriotic Alliance. Current mayor Dada Morero is also facing internal challenges within the ANC, creating a complex political landscape.

Zille has acknowledged that turning Johannesburg around will be a long-term effort, potentially extending beyond a single five-year term.

The Road Ahead

Helen Zille's campaign represents a significant push by the DA to gain control of Johannesburg and showcase its governance capabilities. The 2026 election will be a crucial test of the party's ability to address the city's pressing issues and win over its diverse electorate.
