Former Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille has been announced as the Democratic Alliance (DA) candidate for mayor of Johannesburg in the 2026 local government elections. The announcement took place on Saturday, 20 September 2025, in Soweto, marking a significant shift as Zille aims to lead South Africa’s largest city.
Zille's "Daughter of Johannesburg" Campaign
At 74 years old, Zille launched her campaign by emphasizing her deep roots in Johannesburg, referring to herself as a "daughter of Johannesburg." She highlighted her birth in Hillbrow and early life in Berea and Orange Grove, underscoring her connection to the city. Her aim is to reverse the perceived decline of Johannesburg under the current administration, led by Dada Morero of the ANC.

An unexpected boost came from President Cyril Ramaphosa, who publicly praised DA-run municipalities for their superior service delivery, a statement John Steenhuisen, leader of the DA, has since used to great effect in his campaigns.
Solly Msimanga, the DA's Gauteng leader, emphasized the party's focus on practical improvements in people's lives, contrasting it with the perceived shortcomings of the ANC in governing the city.
