Joplin Little Theatre Presents "Grease" at MSSU's Taylor Auditorium

The Joplin Little Theatre production of "Grease" is moving to Missouri Southern State University's Taylor Auditorium due to ongoing repairs at the theatre's usual location at 3009 W. First St. Audiences can experience the beloved musical in a new venue with performances starting soon.

A Nostalgic Trip Back to Rydell High

"Grease" is a classic musical romantic comedy set in the 1950s, following the lives and relationships of students at Rydell High School. The Joplin Little Theatre production features the original Broadway musical, which opened in 1972, enhanced with rights to four popular songs from the movie adaptation: "Grease," "Hopelessly Devoted to You," "Sandy," and "You’re the One That I Want."

"We wanted everyone to get the full experience of songs they love, but then they also get to hear some new songs that you might not know go with the show," said Marilyn Bouldin, director. "All of these songs put together are beautiful, fun, magical and very nostalgic."

Meet the Cast and Characters

Marilyn Bouldin's cast of 30 includes Anne Marie Wright as Sandy Dumbrowski, the new girl in school, and Jaden Wilson as Danny Zuko, the school heartthrob. Other key characters include Logan Carnes as Kenickie, leader of the Burger Palace Boys, Hannah Kelley as Rizzo, the leader of the Pink Ladies, and Charity Brower as Frenchy.

The musical explores the complexities of friendships, relationships, and individual aspirations during the high school years. According to Bouldin, the stage production offers a broader perspective on the characters compared to the movie adaptation. The book, music, and lyrics for "Grease" were written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey.

A Show for Everyone

According to Marilyn Bouldin, "There’s a lot of things to identify in this musical, much more so than in the movie... The movie focuses on Danny and Sandy, but the musical focuses on all of them and all of their friendships. There’s something relatable in this, friendships, relationships, school, dreams and aspirations."
