Menai Bridge Closes Indefinitely Amid Storm Amy, Transport Secretary Apologizes for Disruption

Key Welsh Bridge Closes Indefinitely Amid Storm Amy Disruption

The Menai Suspension Bridge, a crucial link between Anglesey and mainland Wales, has been closed indefinitely due to essential repair work. This closure coincides with significant disruption across Wales caused by Storm Amy, bringing high winds and widespread power outages.

Menai Bridge Closure Details

The Welsh Government announced the closure, stating that a recent investigation revealed the need to replace bolts on beams under the bridge. Ken Skates, Transport Cabinet Secretary, expressed his "deepest apologies" for the disruption and emphasized that all options to keep the bridge open were explored. He assured that his officials are pressing UK Highways A55, responsible for the bridge's maintenance, for a swift resolution.

"Firstly, I want to apologise to local people. I am deeply sorry for the ongoing disruption that you are facing as work continues to remediate the bridge," said Ken Skates.

No reopening date has been set, and the closure will remain in effect until further investigations are completed and a safe enforcement strategy is provided by UK Highways A55. Emergency service vehicle arrangements are in place should the Britannia Bridge, the other bridge connecting Anglesey to the mainland, be affected by high winds.

Storm Amy Impacts Across Wales

Storm Amy has caused widespread disruption throughout Wales. 85mph gusts have led to the closure of the M48 Severn Bridge and a section of the M4 in south Wales, specifically at Kenfig Viaduct from Junction 38 Margam to Junction 37 Pyle. Hundreds of homes are without power.

  • Travel disruptions include cancelled trains and ferries. A ferry sailing from Dublin to Holyhead experienced significant delays.
  • A fallen tree at Gobowen suspended rail services between Shrewsbury and Wrexham.
  • The M48 Severn Bridge is closed in both directions.

National Grid reported that 462 customers were without power in south and west Wales by 16:00 BST. Anglesey council has reported numerous road closures due to fallen trees. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, highlighting the potential for damage to buildings, delays to transport, and power cuts.

Further Disruption and Safety Advice

Scarlets, a Llanelli-based rugby team, had to postpone their match against Connacht due to travel disruption. High bridges on the A483 south of Wrexham were initially closed but have since reopened. Transport for Wales (TfW) reported a boat crashing into a bridge between Tywyn and Harlech, causing major disruption on the borders line between Newport and Shrewsbury.

The Met Office warns people to be aware of large waves and to stay safe near the coast. They advise keeping dogs on a lead and knowing your route if walking near cliffs. In emergencies, individuals are urged to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
