Padres Defeat Rockies 2-0: Pitching Dominates Dreary Affair
The San Diego Padres defeated the Colorado Rockies 2-0 in the opening game of their four-game series on Thursday night. A strong pitching performance by Randy Vásquez and the Padres' bullpen, coupled with anemic hitting from the Rockies, sealed the victory at Petco Park.
Padres Take Early Lead
McCade Brown, making his fourth major league start for the Rockies, showed improvement but still allowed two runs. In the third inning, Freddy Fermin singled, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Luis Arraez to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. Brown managed to strike out Fernando Tatis Jr. in the same inning.
The Padres doubled their lead in the fourth when Jackson Merrill hit his 11th home run of the season to left field.
Rockies Offense Stalls
Randy Vásquez proved to be a tough opponent for the Rockies' lineup. Despite a leadoff double by Brenton Doyle in the second inning, the Rockies failed to capitalize. Another opportunity arose in the sixth when Mickey Moniak singled and stole second, but subsequent strikeouts by Hunter Goodman and Jordan Beck squandered the chance.
The Rockies managed just four hits and struck out nine times through six innings.
Bullpen Shines Despite Loss
A bright spot for the Rockies was the performance of their bullpen. McCade Brown pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs. Jaden Hill followed with 1 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out three. Jimmy Herget tossed a scoreless seventh, and Victor Vodnik worked around a leadoff hit in the eighth.
However, the Padres' bullpen proved impenetrable, retiring the final 11 Rockies hitters and racking up 14 strikeouts on the night.
