Oud-Heverlee residents give beloved postman Ivo Laurent a heartwarming farewell after 35 years of service

Belgian Postman Ivo Laurent Receives Heartwarming Farewell After 35 Years of Service

For over 35 years, 64-year-old Ivo Laurent has been delivering mail in and around Oud-Heverlee, Belgium. Known in the neighborhood for his cheerful demeanor and willingness to chat, Ivo received a memorable send-off as he prepared for retirement.

A Community's Thank You

Upon learning of Ivo's retirement, scheduled for October 1st, the local post office notified residents via a note. In a heartwarming display of appreciation, numerous residents decorated their mailboxes with flags and balloons. Messages of gratitude were also drawn on the streets.

"This is very sweet," said Ivo. "The whole neighborhood reacted to the note from the post office. That means something. It is a sign of mutual trust. I have delivered letters to them for years, and they are now thanking me for it."

The Importance of Social Connection

Ivo reflected on why the community went to such lengths. "They said they found me friendly and that I always laughed. But I always tried to do that, because even if the weather was bad or I had a lot of work, I always tried to say hello. I found that social contact very important," Ivo explained.

Changes Over the Years

Ivo has seen significant changes in his role as a postman. "First I delivered the mail by bicycle, then by moped, and now by electric car," he stated. "There are enormously more packages now. In the past, I had to go inside people's homes regularly, and they would give me something, but much of that social contact has disappeared."

A Cherished Member of the Community

Resident Diane eagerly awaited Ivo's arrival on his last day, having prepared a personal envelope and a bottle of wine. "Ivo was one in a thousand," she said. "He was a very lovely person and was always cheerful. You could ask him anything, and he was always there to help you. I am really glad that so many people participated, because your last day before retirement is always special. When people do something like that for you, you feel very valued."
