Heritage Day Hit by Widespread Weather Warnings: Floods, Storms, and Fire Danger Expected

By Rorisang Modiba

Heavy rain is expected to flood homes and roads in KwaZulu-Natal and southern Mpumalanga, with families warned to prepare for major damage.

Severe thunderstorms with hail and strong winds are predicted in Gauteng, the Free State, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.

This year’s Heritage Day will be no picnic, with dangerous weather warnings across the country.

The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level 4 warning for KwaZulu-Natal and southern Mpumalanga. Heavy rain is expected to flood roads, damage homes and cause major disruptions.

At the same time, a yellow level 2 warning is in place for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Free State and parts of KwaZulu-Natal. These storms could bring hail, strong winds and flash floods.

It’s not just rain. High fire danger is expected in the North West and Northern Cape. In Gauteng and the Western Cape, high ultraviolet levels mean people should take care in the sun.

Across the provinces, weather conditions vary: Gauteng will be hot with thunderstorms, Limpopo warm with storms, and the Eastern Cape cold and wet. KwaZulu-Natal will be cloudy and cool with widespread showers all day.

The Western Cape is set for rain along the south coast in the morning, clearing later. The Northern Cape stays mostly dry, but storms may hit the northeast.

With so many warnings in place, South Africans are urged to take care on the roads, protect their homes, and stay safe during the holiday.
