Wisconsin QB Billy Edwards Jr. Unlikely to Play Against Alabama

Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. is unlikely to play against the No. 19 Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday, according to sources. Despite the injury, Edwards is expected to travel with the team to Tuscaloosa and warm up before the game, but the chances of him playing remain slim.

Edwards' Injury and Recovery

Edwards sustained a knee sprain during the Badgers' 17-0 victory over Miami University in their season opener. He is currently listed as week-to-week. Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell has stated that Edwards has been actively rehabbing and pushing forward. The team is preparing for all possibilities, acknowledging the need to protect Edwards from potentially re-injuring himself.

O'Neil Poised to Start Again

With Edwards likely sidelined, sophomore Danny O'Neil, a transfer from San Diego State, is expected to start at quarterback for the Badgers. In his two games this season, O'Neil has completed 35 of 46 passes for 403 yards, throwing four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Background on Edwards and Team Outlook

Fickell had previously identified Edwards, a transfer from Maryland, as the starting quarterback in the spring. Last year at Maryland, he threw for 2,881 yards and 15 touchdowns. The Badgers will open Big Ten play next week against Edwards' former school, Maryland. Following that, Wisconsin has a bye week before heading to Ann Arbor to face Michigan on October 4.

Alabama's Injury Report

Alabama is also dealing with injuries. Starting running back Jam Miller and defensive lineman Tim Keenan III are expected to be out for the game. Miller is recovering from a collarbone injury, while Keenan underwent ankle surgery. Wide receiver Ryan Williams, however, has been cleared from concussion protocol and will be available.

Other Notable Injuries

Center Jake Renfro is a game-time decision for Wisconsin with a lower-body injury. Renfro missed Wisconsin’s Week 2 win over Middle Tennessee, and his return would be a significant boost for the offensive line. Last week, backup center Kerry Kodanko struggled with high snaps.

Badgers Face a Tough Test Against Crimson Tide

The Badgers, currently 2-0 after wins over Miami University and Middle Tennessee, face their toughest test yet against Alabama. Alabama enters the game with a 1-1 record after an upset loss to Florida State. Wisconsin is a 20.5-point underdog, as of late Sept. 12, according to BetMGM odds.
