Edward Marte Leads Binghamton's Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration After Receiving National Youth Award

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Binghamton Leader Edward Marte

Every year, from the middle of September through mid-October, the United States recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month. This year, we highlight Edward Marte, a community leader in Greater Binghamton who is dedicated to making a difference.

Edward Marte: A Leader's Journey

Edward Marte has been hosting Binghamton's Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration since 2023. Since emigrating from the Dominican Republic, he has been committed to giving back to his community. "I knew that I came to the United States for a reason. Not being able to go to school for a year really motivated me to continue and also learn about my community and actually want to give back to my community," said Marte.

Marte's journey began early, starting a business at just 13 years old selling clothes and school supplies in the Dominican Republic. At 16, he moved to the US without speaking English. He recalls, "I moved here without my parents and without my family, so it was really challenging to adapt to the culture and being far away from all my family and friends. So, it was definitely really a challenge for me."

Overcoming Challenges and Inspiring Others

Despite the initial difficulties, Marte persevered and continued his passion for helping others. While a student at Binghamton High School, a teacher recommended him to the Puerto Rican Institute in Syracuse to serve as a translator. He would take a 4 a.m. bus to arrive by 5 a.m. for 9:30 trainings. This commitment solidified his path as a leader.

Beyond his community involvement, Marte is also a Spanish teacher at East Middle School. "I know what it is to be in middle school, and I know how it is to be educated, so that’s what really inspired me to give back to the community and help others to be successful in life," explained Marte.

Recognition and Philanthropic Efforts

Marte's dedication has earned him recognition, including the 2025 National Youth Award from the Consulate General of the Dominican Republic in New York for his work abroad. For years, he has donated school supplies to children in the Dominican Republic, personally delivering them to over 250 children this past year. He travels to the island, spending time with the students he assists.

Looking Ahead to Hispanic Heritage Month

With a busy schedule encompassing teaching, philanthropy, and community event organization, Marte expresses his excitement for the upcoming Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. He shares, "I’m looking forward for more people to come together, especially with everything that is going on. I want to see my community come together, I want to see new faces... I want to have more performances that represent not only the Dominican Republic, but the entire Hispanic community.”

The celebration will showcase various Spanish-speaking cultures, featuring diverse food and dance performances. Marte emphasizes his pride in his heritage, stating, "I’m really proud to be Dominican, orgullosamente de ser Dominicano y de celebrar el mez de la Herencia Hispana con todo los Hispanos," which translates to him being proud to be Dominican and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with all Hispanics in the community.
