Putin Responds to Trump: Russia is Not a "Paper Tiger"
Russian President Vladimir Putin has responded to recent comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who labeled Russia a "paper tiger." Putin defended Russia's military actions in Ukraine, arguing that his forces are advancing despite NATO support for the Ukrainian military. The exchange took place during Putin's appearance at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi.
Putin's Rebuttal
Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club, Putin stated that Russia is effectively fighting against the entire NATO alliance, not just the Ukrainian armed forces. He questioned whether a country combating such a powerful bloc could be considered a "paper tiger." This response directly addresses Trump's assertion that Russia should have swiftly won the conflict in Ukraine. Putin also highlighted Russia’s progress on the front lines.
Putin emphasized that Russian troops are making steady gains in various regions. He specifically mentioned that the village of Yunakivka in the Sumi region is now under Russian control. He added that Vovchansk is partially captured, and Russian forces expect to take the rest of the city soon. According to Putin, Russia is establishing a security zone in the area.
Advances on the Front Lines
Putin also claimed that the Russian forces have entered the city of Konstantinovka. He noted that the defensive lines in the area were prepared over a decade with the help of Western specialists. In addition, he mentioned ongoing combat in Siversk and Krasnoaymersk. He reiterated that these advancements demonstrate that Russia is far from being a "paper tiger."
Kremlin's Response to Trump's Comments
Prior to Putin's direct response, the Kremlin had already addressed Trump's remarks. Spokesperson Dmitri Peskov stated that Russia is not a tiger, but a bear, and "there are no paper bears." Peskov also criticized Trump's encouragement of Ukraine to reclaim lost territories, calling it a misguided notion. He asserted that the situation on the front lines is worsening for Ukraine and that Russia's forces are steadily advancing.
Concerns over Tomahawk Missiles
Putin also raised concerns about potential U.S. plans to supply Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles. He described them as a powerful weapon that could escalate tensions between Moscow and Washington. Putin emphasized that the use of Tomahawk missiles would likely require the direct involvement of U.S. military personnel, marking a new and dangerous phase in the conflict.
Accusations of Piracy
In a separate matter, Putin condemned the detention of a tanker off the coast of France, calling it an act of piracy. The tanker is suspected of being part of a "ghost fleet" used to evade sanctions against Russia. Putin claimed that the authorities were searching for military cargo but found nothing. He added that the tanker was sailing under a third-country flag with an international crew.
