Shia LaBeouf and Jon Voight Reconcile After Heated Political Clash
Shia LaBeouf and Jon Voight, co-stars in Francis Ford Coppola's new film "Megalopolis," have reconciled after a significant falling out over political differences. The rift, stemming from Voight's support of President Trump, led to a years-long estrangement that ended with LaBeouf making amends as part of a personal program.
The Origin of the Conflict
The tension between LaBeouf, known for films like "Transformers" and "Holes," and his then-mentor Voight escalated around 2016, when Donald Trump first won the presidency. LaBeouf, a vocal critic of Trump, created an art installation called "He Will Not Divide Us," while Voight publicly supported the president and was even named "special ambassador" to Hollywood. This stark contrast in political views led to a heated phone call where LaBeouf threatened physical violence.
"We had a big fight on the phone where I told him I was going to come to his house, and we were going to fist fight, and I hung up the phone," LaBeouf revealed in the "Megadoc" documentary.
Reconciliation and "Megalopolis"
According to LaBeouf, reconciliation occurred during his participation in a personal program. He felt compelled to make amends to Voight. The two actors have since put aside their differences and appear together in Coppola's highly anticipated "Megalopolis," a process detailed in the documentary "Megadoc". LaBeouf also admitted to having a difficult working relationship with the Director, Coppola.
Voight apparently advocated for LaBeouf to be cast in the film. "He says, ‘I hope you’ll come with us,’ ” says the actor. “And I’m thinking, ‘I love you, but you’re delusional.’ I was beyond persona non grata, I was nuclear.”
"Megadoc" Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Drama
The documentary "Megadoc," directed by Mike Figgis, explores the making of "Megalopolis" and features interviews with LaBeouf, Voight, and Coppola, revealing behind-the-scenes drama and the unique workshop-like approach Coppola took to directing his actors. The film premiered at the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals in August and is now in theaters as of September 19th.
