A "savage and merciless" murderer who bludgeoned a woman to death in her own home has been jailed. Matthew Battenbough, 34, attacked 47-year-old Leanne Williams in Townhill, Swansea, in February after being released from prison on licence. Swansea Crown Court heard Ms Williams was attacked with a frying pan, scissors and a knife in an attack described by the judge as showing "exceptional ferocity". Battenbough gave no explanation as to why he killed his victim, but pleaded guilty to murder and must now serve at least 20 years and 10 months before he can be considered for release from prison.
Police discovered Ms Williams' body in her flat on Gomer Road on 27 February after she was reported missing. Her clothing had been cut and torn and weapons used in the murder were found nearby, carrying her blood and Battenbough's DNA.
