Sydney Teacher Sacked After Sexual Abuse Allegations at St Augustine's College
A female teacher at St Augustine's College in Brookvale, Sydney, has been terminated from her position after being charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse involving a 15-year-old student. Ella Clements, 24, faces serious charges following a police investigation into an alleged inappropriate relationship.
Details of the Allegations and Charges
Ella Clements has been charged with three counts of aggravated sexual intercourse with a child between 14 and 16 years old, and one count of intentionally sexually touching a child between 10 and 16. The charges stem from allegations of an "inappropriate relationship" with a male student at St Augustine’s College. She was arrested on September 16 and subsequently taken to hospital for assessment.
School's Response and Principal's Statement
St Augustine’s principal Jonathan Byrne addressed parents in a letter, stating that the college notified police upon becoming aware of the allegations. Ms. Clements was immediately stood down and her employment has since been terminated. Byrne emphasized the school's commitment to the privacy and well-being of the student and family, cautioning against harmful speculation. He also expressed his belief that the former teacher had "betrayed the trust" placed in her by the college and families.
Legal Proceedings and Bail Application
Following her arrest, Ella Clements appeared at Manly Local Court, where she was initially granted bail with strict conditions, including residing in Ballina, abstaining from social media and smartphone use, and a curfew. However, prosecutors filed an application to stay the bail decision, leading to her continued detention. A review by the NSW Supreme Court is pending, determining whether she will remain in custody or be released under the initial bail conditions.
