Commanders RB Austin Ekeler Out For Season With Torn Achilles

Commanders Lose Austin Ekeler and Deatrich Wise Jr. to Season-Ending Injuries

The Washington Commanders suffered a significant blow after their loss to the Green Bay Packers, as both running back Austin Ekeler and defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. will miss the remainder of the season due to injuries. Ekeler tore his Achilles tendon, while Wise requires surgery for a quadriceps injury.

Austin Ekeler's Achilles Injury

Ekeler's injury occurred during the fourth quarter of the Commanders' 27-18 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night. He fell to the ground without contact while running a route. The team confirmed on Saturday that he suffered a torn right Achilles tendon. This is a major setback for the Commanders' offense as Ekeler was expected to play a crucial role, particularly on third downs and in spread formations.

Coach Dan Quinn acknowledged the significance of the loss, noting Ekeler's unique contributions to the team and his leadership. Ekeler thanked fans for their support in an Instagram story. Last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, Ekeler rushed for 367 yards and gained 366 receiving yards.

Opportunities for Other Running Backs

Ekeler's absence creates opportunities for other running backs on the roster. The Commanders have rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt, veteran Jeremy McNichols, and third-year player Chris Rodriguez Jr. available. Rodriguez had a strong training camp and preseason. It remains to be seen which of these backs will step up to fill the void left by Ekeler.

Deatrich Wise Jr.'s Quadriceps Injury

Deatrich Wise Jr. also suffered a season-ending injury, tearing his right quadriceps. He will require surgery. Wise was injured after a Green Bay lineman fell on his leg during an extra-point attempt. This is a significant loss for the Commanders' defensive line, as Wise had made an immediate impact since joining the team this past spring from the New England Patriots. He showed promise in their season-opening win against the New York Giants.

Quinn described Wise as "an absolute warrior." His departure will likely lead to increased playing time for Javontae Jean-Baptiste. Teammates offered encouragement to Wise as he left the field. He acknowledged the challenges in an Instagram post, stating every challenge carries a lesson.

Other Commanders Injuries

In addition to Ekeler and Wise, several other Commanders players sustained injuries during the game. Tight end John Bates and wide receiver Noah Brown left with groin injuries, and cornerback Trey Amos and left guard Brandon Coleman suffered shoulder issues. Reserve cornerback Jonathan Jones also sustained a hamstring injury. Coach Quinn acknowledged the challenging game from an injury perspective.

"That kind of takes the fight out of you a little bit," said wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr., reflecting on the multiple injuries.

Looking Ahead

The Commanders will now focus on preparing for their Week 3 game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 21. Quarterback Jayden Daniels also appeared to be dealing with some discomfort but stated "I'm good". Despite the setbacks, the team aims to regroup and address the health challenges they face.
