Mother of Three Jailed for Nearly Three Years Over S$277,000 iPhone Scam

Mother of Three Jailed for Cheating 18 Victims of Nearly $277,000 in iPhone Scam

A Singaporean mother of three, Tiang Kim Hua, was sentenced to two years and nine months' jail on October 1st after defrauding 18 victims, including her friends and colleagues, of approximately $277,000. Her scheme involved the supposed sale of electronic devices, such as iPhones, between September and December 2022.

The Scam and Its Victims

Tiang Kim Hua's fraudulent activities centered on offering iPhones and other electronic devices at discounted prices. She targeted her close circle, including friends, colleagues, and even individuals she encountered on the online marketplace Carousell. The 40-year-old logistics firm employee used the money she obtained illegally to finance her gambling debts and continued to commit offenses even while under police investigation.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Wayde Chan stated that Tiang lured victims by either taking money for electronics she never possessed or promoting deals promising “fast cash” by reselling iPhones for profit. In reality, she lacked the means to obtain or resell these items. To establish credibility, she occasionally fulfilled initial orders from Carousell customers.

Details of the Fraud

The largest amount defrauded was nearly $159,000 from a 40-year-old man. He had previously purchased headphones from Tiang on Carousell in July 2022 without issue. In August, she contacted him about discounted electronic gadgets, including iPhones. He subsequently paid her almost $159,000 for items including 114 iPhones and an Apple Watch, none of which were delivered. She has since returned approximately $25,000 to this victim.

Legal Proceedings and Consequences

Tiang pleaded guilty in September to five cheating charges involving five individuals and over $230,000. Fourteen other charges related to the remaining victims and amount were considered during sentencing. She has made a partial restitution of over $38,000 to 13 victims. Despite being under investigation since October 9, 2022, Tiang continued to re-offend.

Following reports to the police in early October 2022, authorities apprehended Tiang. She was arrested in February 2023 and subsequently charged in court. The penalties for each count of cheating can include imprisonment for up to 10 years and a fine.
