New York Ranks in Top 10 Cheapest States for Domestic Flights, Study Reveals

New York Among Top 10 Cheapest States for Domestic Flights

Good news for travelers! New York has been recognized as one of the top 10 most affordable states for domestic air travel. According to a recent report, the average cost of a domestic flight from the Empire State is $377.87, making it a relatively budget-friendly option for those looking to explore the US.

Affordability Calculation Methodology

The report, conducted by NetCredit, an online loans resource, determined flight affordability by calculating the number of work-hours needed at the average local wage, as per the Bureau of Labor statistics, to cover the cost of airfare in each state. This metric provides a clear comparison of how accessible air travel is to residents of different states.

Hawaii and New Jersey ranked even higher on the list, offering domestic flights at a median price of $287.79 and $308.70, respectively. Wyoming, on the other hand, was found to be the most expensive state for domestic flights, with an average ticket price of $611.73.

Working Hours to Afford a Flight

The study further broke down the data by the number of working hours required to afford a domestic flight. New Jerseyans only need to work approximately 8.41 hours, while Hawaiians need to work around 8.77 hours to cover the cost of a plane ticket. New Yorkers, however, would need to work about 9.75 hours to afford a domestic flight.

Unexpected Findings and Airport Rankings

These findings are particularly noteworthy given previous predictions of rising flight costs in 2025. Furthermore, both New York and New Jersey boast affordable airport options.

Atlantic City International Airport in New Jersey ranked fifth cheapest airport in the US, with average domestic flights costing $167.88. New York's Long Island MacArthur Airport secured the 10th spot, offering tickets for about $285.80. Florida’s Orlando Sanford International Airport topped the list with flights for $129.99, while Washington Dulles International Airport was the most expensive at $509.23.
