Nanny Arrested in Durban for Allegedly Abducting Nine-Month-Old Baby
A 35-year-old nanny was arrested in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday, September 27, 2025, after allegedly abducting a nine-month-old baby from a home in Durban. The infant was later found unharmed following a police operation.
Details of the Abduction
The child's mother returned home on Saturday afternoon to find both the nanny and her baby missing. After contacting the nanny, the mother was allegedly told that she was in Empangeni but received no reasonable explanation for the child's disappearance. The mother was reportedly asked to travel alone to Empangeni to retrieve her child.
The mother immediately reported the incident to the Durban Central Police Station, prompting a swift response from relevant police units. An operation was then conducted that led to the nanny’s arrest.
Police Investigation and Findings
In the early hours of Sunday, September 28, 2025, police executed an operation in Empangeni, leading to the arrest of the suspect. Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, a provincial police spokesperson, confirmed that the baby was found unharmed and taken for a precautionary medical examination. “The infant was found unharmed and has been taken for a precautionary medical examination,” said Magwaza.
Preliminary investigations revealed a disturbing motive behind the abduction. The nanny had allegedly told her boyfriend that the abducted child was their own. The boyfriend had reportedly been providing her with R2500 monthly for the child's care.
Legal Proceedings
The 35-year-old suspect is scheduled to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 29, 2025, to face charges related to the alleged abduction.
