Matthew McConaughey's Estrangement From His Mother: A Tale of Trust and Reconciliation
Matthew McConaughey, the acclaimed actor, revealed a period of estrangement from his mother, Mary Kathlene McCabe, due to her habit of leaking private information to the press. This led to a significant reduction in their communication, with McConaughey only sharing essential information during their weekly calls.
The Leak and the Fallout
According to McConaughey, the breach of trust stemmed from his mother's tendency to share personal details with her social circle, which ultimately found their way into newspapers and magazines. “I didn’t trust her anymore,” he stated. “I would tell her something on Sunday, and two days later I would read it exactly in the press, how I had told her. I knew immediately that she was the culprit."

His mother, Mary Kathlene McCabe, now 93, reportedly had no malicious intent, simply expressing enthusiasm and pride in her son's achievements. While McConaughey initially attempted to overlook the issue, it became a recurring problem, leading to his frustration. "One or two times I wanted to turn a blind eye," says the Oscar winner. "But in the end it was a fixed prize. That was very frustrating. You don't want to read everything in the press just like that."
Reconciliation and On-Screen Collaboration
The relationship between Matthew McConaughey and his mother has since mended. The pair are now working together on a film titled The Lost Bus, a thriller about deadly wildfires. The film, directed by Paul Greengrass and also starring America Ferrera, is set to premiere on Apple TV+.
Mary Kathlene McCabe, a former actress who had largely retired from the profession, made an exception to act alongside her son. Having retired from acting several years ago, she rarely accepts film roles. Now that she got the chance to act with her son, she obviously didn't have to think twice.
