Anwar Ibrahim Issues Stern Warning Over Alcohol Served at Tourism Malaysia Event
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has strongly reprimanded Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing and his ministry (MOTAC) after alcoholic beverages were served at a Tourism Malaysia event. The incident has sparked controversy, with Anwar Ibrahim emphasizing that such occurrences must not be repeated, citing the government's strict policy against serving alcohol at official functions.
The Incident and Government Response
The controversy arose after photos circulated online showing alcoholic drinks being served at the Global Travel Meet 2025 Gala Dinner. The ministry initially explained that alcohol was served only after the official program had concluded, but Anwar Ibrahim deemed this explanation unacceptable, highlighting that the event was still taking place at the same venue. The Prime Minister has issued a stern warning to Tiong King Sing and MOTAC.
"We have issued a stern warning to the minister and the ministry. This mistake must not be repeated. Regardless of the explanation that the programme had concluded, it is still entirely inappropriate." - Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim
In response to the reprimand, MOTAC has pledged to ensure that all programs under its purview strictly adhere to established guidelines and ethical standards. The ministry expressed regret for any confusion or misunderstanding caused by the incident.
Conflicting Accounts and Clarifications
Initial reports and social media posts triggered concerns regarding the presence of alcohol at the Global Travel Meet. Masjid Tanah MP Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin claimed that Muslim guests left early due to the alcohol being served. However, Tiong King Sing clarified that the dinner was a private sector initiative and not directly organized by Tourism Malaysia. He stated that Tourism Malaysia was only responsible for the two-and-a-half-day Global Travel Meet, which generated an estimated RM420 million in economic impact.
Broader Implications and UMNO's Stance
The issue has prompted broader discussions about adherence to government policies and sensitivities in a Muslim-majority country. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi commented that the matter would be discussed at a Cabinet meeting to establish UMNO's official position. Zahid emphasized that UMNO strongly opposes the serving of alcohol at Tourism Malaysia's dinner, considering it inappropriate and contrary to Malaysia's status as a Muslim-majority country. He stressed the importance of considering the sensitivities of Muslims at official government events.
Ministry's Commitment and Future Outlook
MOTAC has reiterated its commitment to tighten monitoring and ensure compliance with all guidelines and ethical standards for event organization. The ministry added that it will continue to enhance communication and implement ongoing improvements in executing its responsibilities to the public and the nation. Anwar Ibrahim has also reminded the Cabinet and the entire government apparatus to be vigilant on this issue.
