Guinea Celebrates Independence Day with Focus on Economic Sovereignty
Guinea commemorated its 67th Independence Day on October 2nd with a subdued ceremony at the Place des Martyrs in Conakry. The President of the Transition, General Mamadi Doumbouya, delivered a national address emphasizing economic sovereignty and equitable development as cornerstones of his vision for the nation.
President Doumbouya's Vision: Simandou 2040
In his ten-minute speech, President Doumbouya highlighted the Simandou 2040 program, a plan aimed at achieving national prosperity through economic and political sovereignty. He stated, "Simandou 2040 is first and foremost you, the women, the men, the daughters and sons of our nation. Together, by uniting our forces and our intelligences, we are capable of fully assuming our economic and political sovereignty."
The President stressed the importance of building a strong foundation for sustainable prosperity and ensuring the well-being of the Guinean people.
Progress Since 2021 and International Recognition
Doumbouya reviewed the progress made since the transition began in September 2021, highlighting the reforms he has initiated based on "order, discipline, and excellence in the service of the sovereign people of Guinea." He also mentioned the country's first sovereign rating, which awarded Guinea a B+ with a stable outlook. He claimed that this international recognition places Guinea as the second largest economy in Francophone West Africa.
Transparent Management of Natural Resources and the Sovereign Fund
Looking ahead, the Guinean President announced the imminent establishment of the Sovereign Fund of Guinea, designed to ensure optimal and sustainable management of national resources. Regarding natural resources, Doumbouya emphasized that the Simandou 2040 program aims for the rational and transparent exploitation of Guinean resources. This includes financing modern infrastructure such as railways, ports, roads, and energy projects. Investment in human capital through education, training, and research is also a key component. Furthermore, he noted the importance of promoting Guinean culture, identity, and national pride to build an attractive and competitive nation.
Political Context: Transition and Future Elections
Mamadi Doumbouya assumed power following the coup d'état of September 5, 2021, which ousted former President Alpha Condé and his government. With the new Constitution approved in the constitutional referendum last September, Doumbouya is now eligible to run for president in the upcoming elections.
