Super Mario Galaxy Movie Fuels Fan Theories About Peach and Rosalina's Connection
The announcement of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie has reignited fan speculation regarding the origins of Princess Peach and her potential connection to Rosalina. This theory, fueled by hints in the original Super Mario Bros. Movie and the plot of the Super Mario Galaxy video game, suggests a deeper link between the two characters than previously explored by Nintendo.
Rosalina's Mysterious Backstory in Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy centers on Rosalina, a space princess with similarities to Princess Peach. Her backstory, revealed through a storybook within the game, depicts her search for her long-lost parents. While her mother is pictured, her identity remains vague, prompting fans to theorize a connection to the Mushroom Kingdom and Princess Peach. Yoshiaki Koizumi, the game's director, even admitted to creating the storybook in secret, ultimately surprising Shigeru Miyamoto himself.
Hints in the Super Mario Bros. Movie
A scene in the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie has added further fuel to the fire. During a conversation with Mario, Peach reveals her hazy origins, recounting how she arrived in the Mushroom Kingdom as a toddler via a warp pipe. Dressed in a skirt adorned with stars and moons, she was found and raised by Toads, eventually becoming their princess. This detail, combined with Peach's comment about "a huge universe out there, with a lot of galaxies," has been interpreted by some as a nod to her own galactic origins and a potential link to Rosalina.

Nintendo's Stance and Future Possibilities
Despite the hints, Nintendo has remained ambiguous about the exact nature of the relationship between Peach and Rosalina, leaving fans to debate whether Peach might be Rosalina's mother, daughter, or perhaps even a sibling. However, recent announcements suggest a possible shift in Nintendo's approach. During a recent Nintendo Direct, Koizumi announced a physical version of Galaxy's storybook, and that additional storybook pages would be included for the first time in the Switch 2 re-releases of Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary Announcements and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Coinciding with the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary, Nintendo is releasing a flood of new Mario-themed content. This includes a compilation of both Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Switch 2, a new sports game Mario Tennis Fever, a Switch 2 version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder and a new Yoshi game, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
