Singapore Mosques Targeted with Suspicious Packages Containing Pork
Several mosques in Singapore have recently received suspicious packages containing what appears to be pork, prompting police investigations and condemnation from government officials. The incidents began yesterday when a mosque employee experienced breathing difficulties after opening a package.
Investigation into the Incidents
Yesterday afternoon, the Al-Istiqamah Mosque in Serangoon North Avenue 2 received a suspicious package, leading to a temporary lockdown and evacuation. According to reports, a female employee experienced respiratory distress after opening the package and was subsequently hospitalized. While hazardous materials tests came back negative, the incident has sparked serious concern.
Shanmugam, Singapore's Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for National Security Coordination, confirmed that several mosques have been targeted with similar packages containing "meat". He emphasized that the police are actively investigating these incidents. The authorities are treating these actions as serious provocations, particularly given the religious sensitivities involved.
Government Response and Condemnation
Minister Shanmugam visited Al-Istiqamah Mosque and addressed the situation, stating that sending meat, particularly pork, to mosques is a provocative act and that those responsible will face severe consequences. He noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the motives behind these actions. "The investigations are ongoing, but I want to say that, whatever the motivation, such behavior is playing with fire," said Shanmugam. He has pledged that the authorities will take firm action against the perpetrators.
The Minister further emphasized that such actions targeting religious institutions are completely unacceptable and that there is a "zero tolerance" policy for these types of offences. He affirmed that people should be able to practice their faith in an environment of trust, understanding, and mutual respect. Police are increasing patrols around mosques and closely monitoring the situation.
Statements from Other Officials
Faisal, the Acting Minister in charge of Islamic Affairs and Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Home Affairs, also visited Al-Istiqamah Mosque last night and met with representatives from the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS). He stressed that the government is taking these incidents very seriously and that the police are pursuing all leads to ensure community safety.
Faisal confirmed that the morning prayers (Subuh) at Al-Istiqamah Mosque proceeded as usual today. He reiterated the commitment to protecting religious harmony and ensuring the safety of all places of worship.
